Recording Aisa Ijiri at St Georges Hall, Bristol November 5th 2015

We have just completed another recording of a recital for the supremely talented concert Pianist Aisa Ijiri. This was a lovely acoustic to record in, and also a very good sounding Steinway D concert Grand piano. We used 2 mixing techniques, our old standard for piano mixing a spaced pair of DPA omni 4006 mics not too close in, so as to capture some room acoustic. The other was an ORTF stereo configuration using Schoeps CMC5's with cardioid capsules. A lovely sound was achieved, but why oh why do people not turn their phones off or onto silence, as we found out during the last 10 seconds of the performance! The repertoire consisted of Music of Bach/Liszt, Chopin and Prokofiev.
Thankyou to Gordon Fergus-Thompson and Aisa for the very welcome sustenance after the concert!

Recording Joanna Wallfisch album at Wyastone

We were very pleased to be asked to record Joanna Wallfisch's new album. She is from a well known family of classical musicians her grandmother is the cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who is one of the last known surviving members of the Girl orchestra of Auschwitz and her father is the cellist Raphael Wallfisch. Joanna ( voice and ukelele and piano) assembled a team of Dan Tepfer on piano and melodica, and the Sacconi Quartet on violins, violas and cello. This album is predominantly comprised of Joanna's songs with a couple of tracks by Joni Mitchell and Tim Buckley. Joanna and Dan have been receiving worldwide critical acclaim in reviews of previous albums and live performances, so it was with excitement that we rigged our recording equipment at Wyastone Leys concert hall. We set the quartet up on the stage with the Steinway piano so they were in front of our sound field microphone and the piano to its rear, in cardioid mode so mainly pickup was of the quartet. We mic'ed the 2 violins with Schoeps CMC 5's and the viola and cello with Neumann TLM 193's all close in but still with space to allow the instruments to breathe. The Steinway we mic'ed up with a spaced AB configuration of Dpa 4006 omni's. At the request of Joanna we hired in a Neumann M49 valve vocal mic and some API 3124 mic preamps. The Neumann M49, wow! what can we say, it sounded amazing on Joanna's voice. We also used a Brauner Phantom AE, as a backup vocal mic. We used the API's on the vocal channels and piano, and Focusrite ISA 428 on the strings. It is a great space to work in, with virtually no background noise, so really allows pianissimo playing and singing to shine through. The album still needs to be mixed and have a number of overdubs on some tracks.
Below are some photos and a video from the sessions and some press about Joanna.

Live Sound Hire For Spookyfest 2015

We were pleased to be asked to provide the live sound equipment for Spookyfest. The curators of the event were The Spooky Men's Chorale, who were also performing headline slots with Dele Sosimi and his Afrobeat Orchestra. Other Artists performing during the day included Roy Bailey, Spiro, The Rough Island Band, Folk Dance Remixed, Jess Vincent, Kirsty Bromley and Jenny M Thomas. The Schedule for the day was such that changeovers had to be seamless, sometimes as short as 5 minutes,
which Paul and James coped with brilliantly. Artists and audience complimented us on the quality of the sound. We are looking forward to providing the P.A for this biennial event in 2017.

Preparing Mu-Mu Audio's P.A for the summer

Its great to be able to finally set equipment up for system checking and alignment without having to break it down all the time. Mu-Mu Audio's new workshop facility is very picturesque!
This stack is a quarter of the main rig, just this seemed loud on its own!
Looking forward to providing the sound for a number of events this summer including Stage 2 at Rovin Fest, also Juan Martin and PeatBog Faeries at Hellens Manor for Versatile Arts. If you are thinking of putting on an event and consider the sound quality to be important give us a call/email.

Mu-Mu Audio's day out to an Anechoic Chamber!

Firstly we would like to say a huge thanks to Dr Tim Collins and the Department of Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering at Birmingham University for allowing us to come and do some loudspeaker analysis in this anechoic chamber. It is a very weird experience at first to be in this environment, very quiet, with no noticeable reflections. After a time in here, you start to hear the sound of your own head - it must be especially bad if you have tinnitus!
Anyway a successful day was had, testing the driver frequency responses, and setting crossovers, checking phase and equing the boxes for anechoic flatness. Looking forward to going back to run some further tests, maybe dispersion angles and freefield responses.

Another Microphone for Mu-Mu Audio

Mu-Mu Audio have just added a Brauner VM1 valve microphone, to our list of great microphones.

"The VM1 was the fulfillment of Dirk Brauner?s dream to build his vision of the perfect sounding tube microphone. A microphone that captures the spirit of the classic vintage tube microphones and at the same time, meets the high technical standards of today?s modern microphones. The VM1 was awarded the SSAIR Award in 1998, marking the beginning of a tradition of excellence in design philosophy, engineering and precision.
In our humble opinion, no other microphone has played a greater role in the renaissance of the tube microphone. As the archetype of all Brauner microphones it continues to serve as the inspiration for all Brauner products. The VM1 has a completely natural, modern sound with the highest resolution of sonic detail. Its transparent open character is predestined for vocal and instrumental recordings and is the first choice microphone of top artists and sound engineers all over the world."

Mu-Mu part of the Bicycle creative team.

Matthew and Paul have recently finished the Audio mixing and editing for a major new documentary focussing on the development and history of the Bicycle in the UK.

Screenings across the Country have generated an amazing response to the film.

The film company who made the film are Blue Hippo media based in Birmingham and we were asked to join the creative team to cover the audio mixing and editing after the work we carried out on a documentary about the Greenbelt Festival that we worked on last year.

We managed to make good use of our newest audio repair software as well as using some cutting edge reverb modification software, all running in Pro Tools as the host.

As always it was great working with the Blue Hippo team and we would like to congratulate Michael, Pip, Nina and the rest of the team for producing such a great film, and we are really happy to have provided the quality Audio mixing that it deserved.

You can watch a trailer at:

The film team for Bicycle includes Bafta winning director Michael B Clifford, editor Nina Jones and international award winning film producer Pip Piper of Blue Hippo Media.
Pips recent documentary Last Shop Standing about the UKs independent record shops featured Paul Weller, Johnny Marr and Billy Bragg and received wide critical acclaim.

Here is a quick quote from the film website.

Bicycle a 90 minute documentary, asks the question why is cycling and the bicycle back in fashion? The film, which is directed by BAFTA winning director and keen cyclist Michael B.Clifford tells the story of cycling in the land that invented the modern bicycle, its birth, decline and re birth from Victorian origins to today. The film weaves bicycle design, sport and transport through the retelling of some iconic stories and features interviews with notable contributors Sir Dave Brailsford, Gary Fisher, Chris Boardman, Ned Boulting, Sir Chris Hoy, Tracy Moseley, Mike Burrows and many more plus great archive, animation and music.  Bicycle is a humorous, lyrical and warm reflection on the bicycle and cycling and its place in the British national psyche.

Blue Hippo Quote.

After working with Mu-Mu Audio on our last feature documentary they were our first choice for the audio on Bicycle. Their attention to detail is second to none. We are not only impressed with their technical knowledge but by their ability to work alongside us to achieve the best possible results. They went well above and beyond our expectations and turned out exceptional work under very strict deadlines. Matthew and Paul are now always our first port of call for any audio issues and mixing on large feature length projects as well as smaller pieces of work. We would not hesitate in recommending their services to others.

Recording Backing tracks for Linda Tolchard August 2014

Linda asked us to record solo piano for her backing track collection. This time her pianist of choice is Liam Dunachie, equally at home performing classical scored music or improvising Jazz. The result a very sympathetic recording for Linda to sing solo to at weddings and events. Dpa 4006's in spaced AB was our preferred microphone placement.

Aisa Ijiri Recital at Three Choirs Festival at Huntingdon Hall 29th July 2014

Having worked with Aisa Ijiri at a different venue 5 years ago, we were asked to record her morning recital at the Huntingdon Hall in Worcester as part of the Three Choirs Festival. Her recital included works by Debussy, Manuel de Falla, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. Our Dpa 4006 in spaced AB configuration were used on the Steinway C that she performed with. Some of the Romeo and Juliet pieces by Prokofiev are being used for a TV program. It was a great privilege to record such an amazing pianist.

Mu-Mu provide Live Sound for Laetitia Sadier at Malvern Cube 19th April 2014

We were asked to provide sound for this new venture from Gareth Wynn. We put in our DiGiCo SD9,
our 15 mid top cabs and 2 18" subs aside, also a 4 way monitor rig. Laetitia also requested to use her own active Meyer monitor which was mounted at head height, which we provided a separate send from FoH for. Positive comments about the sound being really good in the venue were gratefully received.
Support was from the incomparable Howard James Kenny.  Click on link for the track Good Fortune recorded and filmed at the gig by Wayne Chudley.

Peatbog Faeries at Hellens House Big Barn.

The first in a series of concerts at Hellens House Big Barn was to be the Peatbog Faeries. With a reputation for being one of the finest live acts in the country we needed to be fully prepared for anything that they could throw at us from a technical perspective. They had their own engineer and he was going to be using his own Digital console. Those of you who have been lucky enough to see the Peatbog Faeries know that they like their Bass, and lots of it, so we sent plenty of subs over, 18.s and 15,s just to be on the safe side. The limiting factor was going to be the power supply as we had over 10K set aside for subs alone. Nevertheless all went well with a packed venue and a great support band in the form of Journeyman from Worcester providing an excellent opening set. The Peatbog Faeries lived up to their reputation as a fantastic live act, and with no complaints from their engineer and compliments from the crowd we were very happy with the sound. Lets  hope they make a return to Hellens before too long, maybe we can use our new Digico console for the next gig.

Mu-Mu provide PA for Juan Martin at Hellens House Barn.

Mu-Mu provided the sound reinforcement for another sell out event at Hellens house barn on November 14th. The artist in question was Juan Martin and the audience were left spellbound by the emotion and virtuosity of his playing. It was a privilege to engineer for this modest and extraordinarily talented guitarist. His storytelling in between his playing was both humorous and fascinating, the story that had everyone totally immersed being his account of when he was asked to play at Pablo Picassos 90th birthday party. Juan was very happy with the sound that we provided for him, thanking us and saying that we had "made his guitar fly tonight" We look forward to the return of Juan Martin at Hellens for what will surely be another amazing evening.
